AHCU Awards A Work of Heart Scholarships to Two Future Leaders

WOODBURY, Minn. — July 13, 2026 — Associated Healthcare Credit Union (AHCU) has awarded two $1,000 scholarships to members pursuing higher education through its annual A Work of Heart Scholarship program, recognizing students who exemplify leadership, purpose and a commitment to financial responsibility.

Essay Scholarship Winner: Jaime Hernandez

Jaime Hernandez of South St. Paul was selected as the winner of the essay competition for his thoughtful reflection on the value of advocacy and its role in shaping both his career and his service to others.Currently an Inpatient Financial Counselor at a Level I Trauma Center in Minneapolis, Hernandez is pursuing a Master in the Study of Law at Hamline University with the goal of becoming an attorney focused on improving equitable access to healthcare. In his essay, Hernandez described helping patients navigate complex healthcare and financial systems, while also advocating for young people through nonprofit community engagement.

Video Scholarship Winner: Abigail Nelson

Abigail Nelson of Lakeville earned the video scholarship by sharing her aspirations to build a career in Sociology of Law, Criminology and Justice and describing how financial literacy will help her achieve her goals. Nelson will attend the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, where she plans to continue preparing for a career dedicated to public service and justice.

Her video highlighted the importance of making informed financial decisions as the foundation for pursuing higher education and long-term career success.

The AHCU A Work of Heart Scholarship program is open annually to members currently attending or planning to attend an accredited college, university or trade school. Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate not only academic ambition but also the values, financial habits and sense of purpose that will help them make a meaningful impact in their professions and communities. They do not have to be pursuing a healthcare career.

The 2026 scholarship program drew 25 applications from AHCU members, including 21 essay submissions and four video entries. One winner was selected from each category by a committee of Board members and credit union leaders.
